Both platforms are built by MetaQuotes, but they suit different traders. MT4 launched in 2005 and was designed for Forex and CFD trading. MT5 arrived in 2010 and adds more asset classes and extra tools. The table below covers the differences that actually matter when you trade.
| Feature | MetaTrader 4 | MetaTrader 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Year released | 2005 | 2010 |
| Best for | Forex and CFD traders | Multi-asset traders (shares, ETFs and more) |
| Programming language | MQL4 | MQL5 (multi-threaded) |
| Built-in indicators | 30 | 38 |
| Timeframes | 9 | 21 |
| Order types | 4 | 6 |

If you mainly trade Forex, use expert advisors or indicators written in MQL4, or you already know your way around the platform, MT4 covers what most retail traders need. MT5 makes sense when you want to trade more markets, need more timeframes and order types, or work with Depth of Market and heavier strategy testing. Some traders use both, since with Axi you can move funds between your MT4 and MT5 accounts.
